A Shift from What Was

Hello Star Wars™: Unlimited players!
Today, I want to talk about some changes coming to booster packs with the release of A Lawless Time. These changes reflect feedback we’ve heard from the community over the first two years of the game’s life, and particularly since the introduction of Carbonite packs. We’re confident that these changes will make for a better pack-opening experience for all types of players, whether you’re opening a handful of packs or an entire booster box.

Let’s start with what’s not changing: booster packs will still contain 16 cards, including a guaranteed leader and base, and essentially the same breakdown of Common, Uncommon, Rare, and Legendary cards in a pack. Draft and sealed play are a huge part of the Star Wars: Unlimited experience, and we want to ensure that experience remains consistent. Instead, the changes to packs will focus on alternate cosmetic versions of cards (like foils, Hyperspace, etc.) and where and how those cosmetics appear.
With that said, let’s dive into what’s different!

No More Black Border Foils
This is the biggest and most noticeable change: we’ll no longer be making foil cards with the normal black border. This is in direct response to what we’ve seen and heard from players. While most alternate versions of cards are popular and exciting to open, from Hyperspace to Showcase, the normal border foils have been the exception. These foils are widely considered to be the least desirable card variant, offering relatively little excitement over the basic version of a card. With every card already having both a Hyperspace and Hyperspace-foil version—and many cards also having other versions, like Prestige variants or Organized Play promos—it just doesn’t make sense to continue making a version of these cards that most players aren’t that interested in.
Of course, we don’t want to remove something from packs without giving you all plenty of cool stuff to make up for it, which brings us to the other changes we’re making.

At Least 1 Hyperspace and 1 Hyperspace-foil in Every Pack
You read that right—every booster pack of Star Wars: Unlimited will now contain at least 1 Hyperspace card (sometimes more) and 1 Hyperspace-foil card. The slot that was previously guaranteed to be a foil card, with a chance to be upgraded to Hyperspace-foil, will now always be a Hyperspace-foil card. We’ve seen how much you love Hyperspace-foil versions of cards, and we’re very excited to now be able to offer these great-looking variants in every single pack.
We’re also now guaranteeing a Hyperspace Common card in every pack. Previously Hyperspace Commons showed up about once every 3 packs, but we think the experience of cracking packs will just be more fun when there’s always a Hyperspace card to look forward to.
But you won’t just be seeing more Common Hyperspace and Hyperspace-foil cards. The drop rate is increasing for Hyperspace and Hyperspace-foil cards across all rarities. While Hyperspace and Hyperspace-foil versions of Rare and Legendary cards will still be hard to find, the rate at which they appear is increasing significantly from where it was in previous sets.

Non-foil Prestige Cards Can Now Appear in Standard Booster Packs
When we introduced Carbonite packs in Jump to Lightspeed, it was a great opportunity to offer some new variants that could be even more exciting than Hyperspace-foil cards. Prestige cards have been a chance for us to really push the limits on alternate art and graphical treatments for cards, and the community’s response to these cards has absolutely blown us away. But one thing we’ve heard time and again is that in some ways, the thrill of opening Carbonite packs has dampened the experience of opening regular booster packs a bit.
We want to make sure that all of our packs still feel exciting to open, so we’re bringing Prestige cards to standard booster packs as well. Starting in A Lawless Time, about 1 in every 18 booster packs will contain a non-foil Prestige variant, drawn from the same pool of non-foil Prestige cards found in Carbonite packs. This adds another level of cards to chase in booster packs and creates some cool moments where even players who aren’t buying Carbonite packs get a chance to open these beautiful variants.
Of course, Carbonite remains the best place to find Prestige cards, with 1 being guaranteed in every Carbonite pack. And the higher levels of Prestige—foil and serialized cards—will remain exclusive to Carbonite.

Adjustments to Carbonite Packs
Finally, we’re making some adjustments to what you’ll find in Carbonite packs. The most obvious change is that, with the elimination of normal bordered foils, you’ll no longer find those cards in Carbonite packs. Instead, there will be more Hyperspace and Hyperspace-foil cards in each pack. The number of Hyperspace cards is increasing by about 3 cards per pack, while the number of Hyperspace-foils per pack is jumping from 2 to 6. While the feedback we’ve heard on Carbonite has been overwhelmingly positive, the normal foils were consistently rated as the least exciting part of the pack, so we hope that replacing those cards with more Hyperspace and Hyperspace-foil cards will make opening Carbonite packs feel even better.
We’re also adding some new levels of chase to our serialized Prestige cards. For the first 3 sets of Carbonite, every serialized Prestige card was 1 of 250 copies in the world. Starting with A Lawless Time, we’re adding a bit more variety. Most serialized Prestige cards will still be printed at 250 total copies, but we’ve selected a couple of subsets to be even rarer. Some of our serialized Prestige cards will now be printed at only 100 total copies each, and some will be even rarer at 50 copies each. These are the rarest cards ever to appear in packs for Star Wars: Unlimited and can be an extra-special piece of your collection if you’re lucky enough to open one!
The one other change we’re making is an adjustment to the rate at which Showcase leaders appear in Carbonite. When we launched Carbonite, we had Showcase leaders show up at a very high rate compared to normal booster packs. While this helped make Carbonite exciting to open, we set that mark a bit too high and ended up with too many Showcase leaders out in the world, ultimately making them feel a bit less special and diminishing the excitement of opening a Showcase in a normal booster pack. Therefore, we’re significantly dialing back the drop rate of Showcase leaders in Carbonite specifically, while leaving the rate in standard booster packs the same as it always has been.

Looking to the Future
There’s one other piece of feedback that we’ve heard consistently from players but that we could not quite make happen in time for A Lawless Time, which is that opening a base in your rare slot feels disappointing. While bases will still show up in the rare slot for this set, we’re happy to announce that A Lawless Time will be the last set for which this will be true. Going forward, any time we have a base with a special ability, it will appear in the base slot in the pack. More details on this to come when we talk about future sets.
And that’s it for today! We’re really excited about these changes and hope that you all will be too. As always, let us know what you think—we’re always eager for feedback and looking for ways to keep improving.
