Riddles from Home

I’ve seen a lot of excitement from people for the upcoming Homeworlds set for Star Wars™: Unlimited, and now it’s time to start previewing the set! I’ve rounded up some exciting details about the cards in the set to give you a glimpse into what you can look forward to, even if I can’t tell you the whole story. I look forward to seeing everyone’s speculation in the weeks to come!

Given the theme of the set, perhaps it won’t come as a surprise to learn that only half of the leaders in the set have humanlike faces (and even fewer are actual humans). But did you also know…

  • Each of the four main alien cultures featured in the set has a unique mechanical identity instead of being strictly “trait matters.”

  • This set features scenes and characters from both The Acolyte and The Bad Batch in a bigger way than any other set so far.

  • Homeworlds adds a bunch more multi-aspect cards to the metagame: more than in Ashes of the Empire, but not as many as in A Lawless Time.

  • For the first time, we’re introducing a mechanic that appears on almost no Common cards! (It appears on exactly one Common.)

  • There is a cycle of Rare unique units with no abilities that were designed to be competitively strong in specific kinds of decks.

  • This set has more Creature units than any other set before it, including five that play to the space arena!

  • There are a surprising number of ways to damage your own units in this set, and an equal number of rewards for doing so.

This time around, it was mostly MJ Cutts and I who wrote the subtitles for the set, and I think we got some pretty evocative ones into the lineup. Here are some personal favorites—who do you think they could belong to?

  • Few Greater Battles to Fight

  • Everyone has a Weakness

  • Screaming Predator

  • Shadowlands Insurgent

  • Cycle of Vengeance

  • Family Found

  • Corruption Must Be Eradicated

  • No Time for Regret

  • Old Master

  • Perfectly Legal

  • A Ship for a Life

  • I’ve Changed

Normally I would be excited to tease you with something like “There’s a leader in this set who’s also a Vehicle unit,” but the Grand Moff Tarkin / Death Star leader has already been previewed. But there’s plenty of other fun trivia about the cards in the set, such as…

  • There are three low-cost Cunning cards in the set that are each inspired by a similar card from Spark of Rebellion, Shadows of the Galaxy, and Twilight of the Republic respectively.

  • There’s one card in the set that has the Legends frame that originally didn’t, and one card in the set that doesn’t have the Legends frame that originally did (both changed after we did more research).

  • There’s a common event in the set that can permanently remove an enemy unit from play without defeating it.

  • A common unit in the set allows you to resource the top card of your deck on the second round of the game.

  • One of the most aggressive leaders in the set rewards you for attacking units, not bases. What’s that about?

  • This set looks for opportunities to put traits into contexts where they may not usually appear, such as a villainous Clone unit, a Gungan unit that’s also a Separatist, and a Tusken unit with a familiar name.

  • A leader in the set rewards you for playing Fringe units in your deck alongside a more populous trait. (Which one???)

  • One of the cards in the set rewards you for drawing three copies of it in the same game.

  • For the first time, we’ve printed Ambush on a leader directly!

Finally, I know fans are always eager to know what cards do. I can answer some of those questions…but I can’t promise you’re seeing the whole story with each of these abilities. What cards do you think they’re on, and what else could they do?

  • While playing this unit, you may defeat any number of ready resources you control.

  • If attached unit is a Twi’lek

  • If attached base would be dealt 5 or more damage…

  • Other friendly units get –2/–2.

  • Defeat a friendly Creature unit. If you do…

  • You may reveal a Disaster card from your hand.

  • If a friendly ability would deal damage…

  • While it’s the first round of the game…

  • You may defeat a Condition upgrade.

  • When an enemy leader deploys:

  • Enemy cards, including those not in play, lose that Trait

  • Friendly units can attack bases while using Ambush.

  • If the friendly unit has Overwhelm, deal the excess damage to an enemy base.

  • For this attack, replace any Raid it has or gains with Restore, or vice versa.

That’s all the clues I have for you today! Feel free to let me know on social media what cards you expect to see in the set.

Until then, may you feel inspired to try something new.
