Near the end of the Galactic Championship, we showed off our first look at Secrets of Power, the thrilling next set of the Star Wars™: Unlimited trading card game. In that first look, we gave a brief glimpse at the two new Spotlight Decks that would release alongside the new set. These pre-built decks feature the high-profile officials of Chancellor Palpatine and Padmé Amidala, and they're here to usher in the new set with perfect demonstrations of its two primary new mechanics.

Just like with previous sets, these decks include cards from older sets mixed in with the new ones to help create a more optimized experience for anyone who wants to pick one up and start playing. Today, we want to take a deeper look at the new cards you can find in the Secrets of Power Spotlight Decks, so without further ado, let's kick things off with a look at Chancellor Palpatine!

Concocting diabolical schemes as a Vigilance and Villainy leader, Chancellor Palpatine (Secrets of Power, 1) showcases the set's new Plot keyword front and center. We touched on his playstyle during the first look article, but as a quick refresher, Palpatine's leader ability lets him skim the top 5 cards of your deck for a card with Plot, reveal it, and add it to your hand. A card with Plot can be played from your resources (paying its cost) whenever you deploy your leader, making your deployment turn even more explosive and impactful than usual, especially since you can use Plot to play multiple cards at once! Palpatine takes this a step further with his unit ability, which gives you a sizable discount on the first card you play using Plot when he deploys. This can allow for a devastating turn when he finally takes to the field, bringing two or maybe even three cards into play that your opponent suddenly has to deal with!

Naturally, Palpatine's pre-built deck comes with a plethora of Plot cards to support his playstyle, each with different, useful tools to help you build your path to victory. Cad Bane (Secrets of Power, 34) can immediately take out a low-HP unit, while Sly Moore (Secrets of Power, 33) can reduce your opponent's offensive power for the entire phase. If your opponent has multiple threats on the field, playing a Dogmatic Shock Squad (Secrets of Power, 36) can surprise them with an unexpected Sentinel, which can be made even more of a problem with some Armor of Fortune (Secrets of Power, 70) equipped. If you need quantity more than quality, you can play the unit version of Chancellor Palpatine (Secrets of Power, 82) to net yourself some Spy (Secrets of Power, T01) tokens and give them Sentinel, and you can even call on Mas Amedda (Secrets of Power, 84) to boost their power. And speaking of power, the leader version of Palpatine is no slouch himself as a unit, especially when he unleashes his Unveiled Might (Secrets of Power, 123)! With so many Plot cards in your pocket, you will inevitably be unable to play them all at once; fortunately, all you have to do is declare that When Has Become Now (Secrets of Power, 245), and you can unveil your Plot whenever you want!

While Palpatine's deck primarily revolves around his Plot cards, he will still need some tools to keep your opponent occupied while he schemes behind the scenes. Fortunately for him, he has a large number of Official units at his beck and call to help with exactly that. With just a few Spy tokens in play, a Corrupt Politician (Secrets of Power, 79) becomes an annoying blocker for very low cost, and Nute Gunray (Secrets of Power, 31) can give any of those spies Sentinel if the Politician ends up defeated. Meanwhile, Major Partagaz (Secrets of Power, 81) slowly gains power with every Official unit that attacks during the phase (including Spy tokens), making him especially dangerous when paired with the likes of Dedra Meero (Secrets of Power, 87), who can Ambush in and create a Spy token at the same time! As if that weren't enough, the ISB Shuttle (Secrets of Power, 83) can replace a defeated unit with a Spy token on entering play, while I Am the Senate (Secrets of Power, 92) can create 5 at once, giving you plenty of targets for Vice Admiral Rampart (Secrets of Power, 85) and Budget Scheming (Secrets of Power, 124) to boost your offensive power. Finally, after your Spy tokens have softened up the enemy, call on a Political Bully (Secrets of Power, 241) to finish the job and help you take control of the battle!

Speaking of control, the remaining cards in Palpatine's deck help him keep the battle under control as he manipulates his officials and sets up his plots. Cards like Dhani Pilgrim (Secrets of Power, 55) and The Chancellor's Shuttle (Secrets of Power, 27) can provide some much-needed healing during the early game, and the latter can even boost another unit with an Experience token on its way out. These cards also make great targets for the new “disclose” mechanic, which has you reveal them to your opponent to pay for an ability. Neither the Pilgrim nor the Shuttle will give away your ultimate plan, leaving you free to disclose them for cards like the Cantwell Arrestor Cruiser (Secrets of Power, 37) and Charged with Murder (Secrets of Power, 76), both of which can remove a key threat from play. Perhaps the best card to disclose, however, is Retaliation (Secrets of Power, 77), as you will show your opponent exactly what will happen to their units if they dare to strike your base. Even the most stalwart of foes will have to think twice about attacking your base with their leader when the threat of Retaliation hangs over their head!

Standing opposed to Chancellor Palpatine in the other Spotlight Deck is Padmé Amidala (Secrets of Power, 16), a Cunning and Heroism leader. Where Palpatine's playstyle revolves around plotting in the background, Padmé is all about revealing information upfront in key, strategic ways. While she's not above utilizing a Plot card here and there herself, Padmé's main focus is around the disclose mechanic; case in point, her leader ability lets her deal a point of damage whenever you reveal or discard a card from your hand, and since disclosing cards has you reveal them from your hand, the more you disclose, the more ground you will gain!

With that in mind, it comes as no surprise that many of the cards in Padmé's deck let her either disclose or discard for some form of benefit. Mina Bonteri (Secrets of Power, 94) can provide a bit of healing while she's in play, and upon her defeat, you can disclose two Command and one Heroism aspect to draw a card (and deal a point of damage, thanks to Padmé's ability). Then there's Captain Typho (Secrets of Power, 98), a stalwart Sentinel unit that allows you to disclose Command and Heroism for a small heal every time he is attacked. Since there's nothing stopping you from disclosing the same cards over and over, you could potentially get multiple heals while Typho is in play! If Typho goes down, the Naboo Security Force (Secrets of Power, 120) or B2EMO (Secrets of Power, 248) can pick up the slack, granting Sentinel to a unit in exchange for disclosing an aspect or two, and if you need to attack fast, Ahsoka Tano (Secrets of Power, 96) lets you disclose Command and Heroism to swing with another unit right after she does. If you don't have the right cards to disclose, the Furtive Handmaiden (Secrets of Power, 197) still lets you use Padmé's ability while also helping you search for what you need. In a similar vein, Bail Organa (Secrets of Power, 198) can also trigger Padmé's ability while giving you a Spy token to help build up your forces.

As a reminder, while Padmé is on her unit side, there is no limit to how many times she can deal damage with her ability, which means multiple disclosures and discards in the same phase can add up damage very fast. This is further compounded by cards like Charged with Corruption (Secrets of Power, 127) and Bog Down in Procedure (Secrets of Power, 234), which can remove key threats from play on top of the damage they let Padmé deal. And once you have a decent number of units in play, you can utilize With Thunderous Applause (Secrets of Power, 129) to boost them up and close out the game.

Speaking of boosting units, much of the rest of Padmé's pre-built deck revolves around your units working together to achieve victory through cooperation. The Taylander Shuttle (Secrets of Power, 115) can create Spy tokens for you while you have the initiative, which gives you access to Official units that can boost up the Nubian Star Skiff (Secrets of Power, 116). C-3PO (Secrets of Power, 93) can return himself to your hand to grant another unit +2/+2 for the phase, which is a boost that units like the Bravo Squadron Fighter (Secrets of Power, 199) and Hunter (Secrets of Power, 208) can use to really punch through the enemy's defenses. Jar Jar Binks (Secrets of Power, 111) can also grant +2/+2 to a unit for the phase, and his Plot keyword means he can be played at the same time as the Naboo Royal Starship (Secrets of Power, 99) the moment you decide to deploy Padmé to the field. The Royal Starship grants Padmé Raid 2 and Overwhelm, and when you combine that with a boost from Jar Jar or C-3PO, your opponent will not be able to ignore her for long. Even if your opponent manages to exhaust Padmé, Mon Mothma (Secrets of Power, 103) can let her attack anyways, and her solid HP means she can Dismantle the Conspiracy (Secrets of Power, 106) and guard several captured enemy units at once. Just having Padmé as your leader means that Anakin Skywalker (Secrets of Power, 201) gains Raid 2, and thanks to his Hidden keyword, you can take the time to equip him with Sneaking Suspicion (Secrets of Power, 226) for an extra boost to his stats. Finally, once you've got either Padmé or Anakin boosted up, grant them Moral Authority (Secrets of Power, 256) to capture a key threat and halt your opponent's momentum!
