Aspects and Credits

Back in November, we unveiled the first look at A Lawless Time, the thrilling next set of the Star Wars™: Unlimited trading card game. In that first look, we showed off some of the exciting new things introduced in this set, including a pair of new Spotlight Decks that will release alongside it. These pre-built decks feature Leia Organa and Jabba the Hutt, and they're here to usher in the new set by highlighting what makes A Lawless Time special.
As with all Spotlight Decks, these decks include cards from older sets mixed in with the new ones to help create a more optimized experience for anyone who wants to pick one up and start playing. Today, we're taking a deeper look at all the new cards you can find in the A Lawless Time Spotlight Decks, so without further ado, let's kick things off with Leia!

Bolstering her allies as a Command and Heroism leader, Leia Organa (A Lawless Time, 10) arrives with a playstyle that highlights one of the core aspects of the new set (see what we did there?). As we covered in the first look article, A Lawless Time introduces the game's first multi-aspect cards, and on her leader side, Leia embodies this by providing a boost to a unit's power and HP that scales to the number of different aspects it has. This works great for units like Lando Calrissian (A Lawless Time, 108), whose already-decent stats suddenly become much more threatening at the cost of a couple resources. This sort of interaction is further compounded by Leia's unit-side ability, which can grant a unit (any unit) an Experience token for each different aspect you control. Since Leia has every non-Villainy aspect in her pre-built deck, that means you could potentially grant a whopping five Experience tokens to a unit of your choice when Leia deploys with the right setup.
This theme of bolstering your units carries through the rest of Leia's deck as well. Units like the Scarif Lieutenant (A Lawless Time, 142), Jyn Erso (A Lawless Time, 67), and C-3PO (A Lawless Time, 152) all provide additional means of granting Experience tokens to your units, while Han Solo (A Lawless Time, 37) and the Jaunty Light Freighter (A Lawless Time, 147) are able to boost themselves. The event Common Cause (A Lawless Time, 167) can mimic Leia's unit-side ability (albeit temporarily), Leia's Disguise (A Lawless Time, 111) can potentially grant a Shield to a unit of your choice, and once you've got someone sufficiently powered-up, you can hit your opponent with Nothing Left to Fear (A Lawless Time, 41) and take out one of their units in an instant.

All these boosts to power and HP are well and good, but they don't mean anything without a good unit to give them to! Thankfully, units like Lepi Lookout (A Lawless Time, 38) and Massassi Group Marines (A Lawless Time, 146) are solid low-cost units that make great targets for early-game boosts, while in the mid- to late-game, you can give those boosts to the likes of Ezra Bridger (A Lawless Time, 35) or Zeb Orellios (A Lawless Time, 45), turning them into problems your opponent can't ignore. Cinta Kaz (A Lawless Time, 105) can get extra value out of an Experience token by granting herself Sentinel while upgraded, while Bodhi Rook (A Lawless Time, 104) can grant Sentinel to any friendly Rebel unit, giving you a way to keep your powered-up units safe. Finally, if you're having trouble finding the unit you need for the situation, call on R2-D2 (A Lawless Time, 145), Rogue One (A Lawless Time, 119), or the event Putting a Team Together (A Lawless Time, 166) to help you track them down.
Having a deck built around bolstering units and capitalizing on controlling multiple different aspects helps Leia stand out amongst her peers, but it also raises a particular concern: in order to fully optimize a deck for a leader like Leia, you're going to want to include as many aspects as possible in that deck. Which, of course, means at some point you are going to have to contend with the aspect penalty. Thankfully, every Common base in A Lawless Time provides a way to ignore an aspect penalty once per game, and the Common base in Leia's deck, Daimyo's Palace (A Lawless Time, 20), is no exception. Bases like this one encourage you to break the deckbuilding conventions you'd normally adhere to, and they allow a multi-aspect-focused leader like Leia to truly shine.

Where the Leia leader focuses on bolstering her allies, the Jabba the Hutt (A Lawless Time, 15) leader is all about bolstering his own fortune. Lurching onto the scene as a Cunning and Villainy leader, Jabba showcases the other primary new feature of A Lawless Time, Credit (A Lawless Time, T01) tokens! These special tokens can almost be thought of as “temporary resources,” though they do not actually count toward the number of resources you control (so they can't be used to deploy your leader faster). Instead, whenever you would pay resources—such as to play a card or use an ability—you can defeat any number of Credit tokens you control to grant yourself a 1-resource discount for that card/ability for each Credit you defeat. The ability on Jabba's leader side allows you to create a Credit token at the cost of a resource and returning an Underworld unit to your hand, allowing you to invest in a powerful mid- to late-game board state where Jabba's unit side lets you spend Credits to give any of your Underworld units Ambush.
With abilities like those, you'll naturally want plenty of Underworld units in your deck, and Jabba's pre-built deck does not disappoint. Salacious Crumb (A Lawless Time, 210) is the perfect first turn play for Jabba, since having Jabba as your leader means that Crumb enters play ready. Since he only costs one resource, you can play Salacious Crumb, attack with him on your next turn, and then use your remaining resource to return him to your hand and create a Credit token with Jabba's leader ability. Just like that, you're going into round two with effectively four resources at your disposal, though as you will see, you might want to save that Credit token for later.

There are several other low-cost Underworld units in Jabba's deck that can also help you build up Credits. The Syndicate Spice Runner (A Lawless Time, 136) is not only an Underworld unit itself, but also can help you find another one—such as a Black Sun Patroller (A Lawless Time, 211) or a Black Sun Cabalist (A Lawless Time, 249)—to follow-up with on your next play. Bib Fortuna (A Lawless Time, 134) is an especially valuable pick, since he can create a Credit token when he enters play and is an Underworld unit that Jabba can bounce back to hand for a second Credit. In order to assist you with having enough spare resources to use Jabba's leader ability, you can deploy his sail barge, the Khetanna (A Lawless Time, 158), to reduce your Underworld units' costs. If you have a Credit token to spare, this works particularly well with the Weequay Pirate (A Lawless Time, 231), allowing it to punch above its weight before Jabba returns it to hand for another Credit. And with a handy event like The Axe Forgets (A Lawless Time, 246) letting you remove an opposing unit, you can use Jabba's ability without having to worry about leaving your base too exposed.
Of course, Jabba can only create one Credit token per round, so you will want some additional means of building your funds before you deploy your leader. Fortunately, Jabba's deck comes with several alternate means of generating credits. The simplest method is with the event Unmarked Credits (A Lawless Time, 244), which lets you create a Credit token on the spot. Another more repeatable method is through defeating units with Fett's Firespray (A Lawless Time, 252), which is more than doable thanks to the ship's access to Ambush. If one Credit token at a time is too slow for you, you can conduct some business with your opponent through use of the Vermillion (A Lawless Time, 215), which could net you a whole pile of Credits at once—or a free card play, if you don't mind giving your opponent some Credits instead. In a similar fashion, the event Double-Cross (A Lawless Time, 170) lets you exchange units with your opponent, potentially granting multiple Credit tokens to whoever receives the lower-cost unit. In a set titled “A Lawless Time,” it's no surprise that loyalty is cheap, and the only thing you can trust is cold, hard credits!
So! You've made it past the first few rounds, and now you're ready to deploy Jabba with a pile of Credit tokens at your disposal. What can you spend them on? For starters, a heavy-hitting Underworld unit like Jabba's Rancor (A Lawless Time, 216) would certainly benefit from gaining Ambush from Jabba's unit ability. With a glut of resources and Credit tokens, you can use Jabba's ability to grant Boba Fett (A Lawless Time, 214) Ambush, potentially letting him deal 6 damage to ground units independently of the one he attacks. Add in the ability of 4-LOM (A Lawless Time, 65), and you can use Boba Fett's ability a third time in the same round!

All this sounds great, but what if you want something even more intense? What if you could grant Ambush to something as massive as The Sarlacc of Carkoon (A Lawless Time, 163), which you can pull from your deck at any point thanks to the Epic Action of the unique base in Jabba's deck, the Great Pit of Carkoon (A Lawless Time, 23)? Well, unfortunately, the Sarlacc doesn't have the Underworld trait, so it sadly does not qualify for Jabba's ability…unless you happen to play Malakili (A Lawless Time, 212) and make it an Underworld unit! Just like that, you have an enormous 8/9 monstrosity with Ambush at your disposal, and the best part? With just four Credit tokens, you can play both Malakili and the Sarlacc on the same round that you deploy Jabba! Whether you give the Sarlacc Ambush with Jabba's ability or simply use it in tandem with events like Haymaker (A Lawless Time, 168) to make it even deadlier, your opponent is sure to fear the moment you unveil the horror of the Dune Sea.

With that, you now know all the new cards that you can find in the A Lawless Time Spotlight Decks. Check out the image above to see the full card list for each deck, including all the returning cards from previous sets. We've shown a lot today, but there's even more to come as we look forward to the set's full launch in March. Keep an eye out for more previews in the coming weeks!
