Meta Update from the Team

Hello, Star Wars™: Unlimited players! Game Developer Ryan Miles here with a metagame update. As usual, we’ll start with the important bit:
There are no changes to the suspended cards list with this update.
The Legends of the Force competitive metagame has gone through many evolutions over the past few months, kicked off by an extremely diverse Galactic Championship Top 8 with Mother Talzin (Power Through Magick), piloted by Filip Szkudlarek, emerging on top! From there, the Planetary Qualifier season showed a healthy metagame in terms of leader diversity, with multiple viable options to choose from when attempting to earn some Qualifier Points. However, Aggression proved to be an incredibly dominant aspect after several weeks of compiling tournament data, and we made the decision to suspend Force Throw prior to our Sector Qualifiers and Regional Championship.
With the goal of bringing the balance of aspects closer in line with each other, the Force Throw suspension was an overall success. Command currently takes the top slot of aspect popularity, but at closer to a healthy 60% of the field compared to Aggression’s 70+% prior to the suspension. At the same time, Aggression Force token-based decks did not disappear completely, with Mother Talzin again proving her strength and winning the Regional Championship in Bilbao in the hands of Sasan Abbasi. While Cunning stands on the lower end of play rate, it’s still a competitively viable option, as shown by Mike Gemme taking down the Portland Sector Qualifier with Emperor Palpatine (Galactic Ruler) and a Cunning base.
We're very happy with the meta leading up to the release of Secrets of Power, and don’t feel that adding any cards to the suspended list is necessary at this time. However, in an effort to emphasize that suspensions in Star Wars: Unlimited are inherently meant to be as temporary as possible, we took extra measures to examine our current suspended list and evaluate if any cards could be re-introduced to the metagame and provide positive impact. Boba Fett (Collecting the Bounty) and DJ (Blatant Thief) have had very little change in the context of what got them suspended—Boba’s power level is simply higher that other leaders of the same cost, and DJ would be too large of a hit to the success of leaders that want to deploy on 6 or more resources. For Jango Fett (Concealing the Conspiracy) and Triple Dark Raid, things weren’t as clear-cut.
While Boba saw success from day 1, and DJ quickly jumped to the top once Boba Fett was removed from the equation, Jango Fett and Triple Dark Raid had a relatively healthy stay in Star Wars: Unlimited prior to the release of Jump to Lightspeed. There’s meaningful conversation to be had about the root of the problem: were Jango Fett and Triple Dark Raid the core offenders, or could they be reintroduced if another suspension was levied elsewhere? Jango Fett was relatively tame until War Juggernaut could be used to exhaust entire boards. Triple Dark Raid was certainly strong when it put a ready Ruthless Raider into play, but reached completely new heights of damage with Devastator (Hunting the Rebellion). While we want to prove with our actions that suspensions mean that cards can come back, we don’t want to sacrifice the competitive metagame to do so. We tested a few possible combinations of adjusting the suspended list, but ultimately determined that Jango Fett and Triple Dark Raid were (and still are) the underlying causes of the issues with the initial Jump to Lightspeed metagame. Additionally, as Force Throw was suspended as both a power outlier and a correction to an Aggression-heavy metagame, it’s important to note that both Jango Fett and Triple Dark Raid operate at their strongest when paired with Aggression. Removing either from the suspended list would not align with our goal of maintaining a more balanced spread of play rates among aspects.
While these cards will not get their time in the sun in Secrets of Power, we’re excited to see how players push them to new limits in the Eternal format when A Lawless Time introduces our first rotation to the game next year.
Thanks for reading!
