Cunning
As we fly toward the release of the Star Wars™: Unlimited trading card game, we want to show off each of the game’s deckbuilding aspects. In a game of unlimited possibilities, the aspects help shape the direction and mechanics of the cards in your deck. At this point, we’ve already shown off the Heroism (white), Villainy (black), Vigilance (blue), Command (green), and Aggression (red) aspects. Today, we’re taking a look at the final aspect: the yellow aspect, Cunning!
Befitting its name, the Cunning aspect is all about tricks; more specifically, tricks that disrupt your opponent in the moment. This gives the aspect an emphasis on immediacy and unpredictability, and the abilities on its cards reflect that. Lots of Cunning units, such as the Syndicate Lackeys (Spark of Rebellion, 213), have Ambush, granting them a chance to immediately attack the instant they hit the field. Others, such as the starter decks’ Leia Organa (Spark of Rebellion, 189), provide powerful and versatile When Played effects that give you the tools to disrupt your opponent’s strategy. Still others, such as the bounty hunter Greedo (Spark of Rebellion, 204), have abilities with unpredictable outcomes that might make your opponent think twice about attacking them!
The theme of disrupting your opponent carries through to Cunning’s events as well. This aspect has the most events overall, and many of them carry effects that can throw off a player’s entire strategy. For example, the event No Good to Me Dead (Spark of Rebellion, 186) not only exhausts a unit, but also prevents that unit from readying through the end of the round, including during the regroup phase. If you target one of your opponent’s core units (such as a deployed leader) with that effect, they may have to rethink their whole approach. In a similar vein, the event Spark of Rebellion (Spark of Rebellion, 200) lets you look at your opponent’s hand and choose a card from it to discard, which gives you valuable insight for planning your next move and potentially lets you get rid of a vital card before they have the chance to play it.
In order to maximize their card abilities in the moment, it’s crucial for Cunning decks to have the resources to play those cards. After all, if you don’t have the resources, you won’t be able to outmaneuver your opponent nearly as effectively. Fortunately, the Cunning leader Boba Fett (Spark of Rebellion, 15) lets you get extra use out of your existing resources whenever an enemy unit leaves play. This means you could use Waylay (Spark of Rebellion, 222) to bounce a nasty unit back into your opponent’s hand, then use Boba Fett’s ability to ready a resource so you can take on what comes next. Meanwhile, the Han Solo (Spark of Rebellion, 17) leader allows you to temporarily “cheat” an extra resource into play, giving you more to work with for the round than what you normally would have. The best part? Since his ability lets you control an extra resource, you could end up deploying Han a round earlier than normal!
Between powerful, immediate effects and endless tools for disrupting the opponent, this aspect is a perfect fit for players who prefer to be “in the moment” and have an answer for anything their opponent could throw their way. Naturally, this playstyle is exemplified by Cunning (Spark of Rebellion, 203) itself, a mighty “double-yellow” event that can alter the momentum of an entire round!
