Cad Banned

Hello, Star Wars™: Unlimited players! Game Developer Ryan Miles here with a metagame update:
Cad Bane: Still Faster Than You is suspended from Premier.
For those of you that have followed our Galactic Championship and the following Sector Qualifiers, this likely doesn’t come as much surprise. Cad Bane (Ashes of the Empire, 11) has immediately cemented himself as the deck to beat, emerging as not only the most played deck, but converting to Top Cut extremely well despite the target on his back. The data behind Cad Bane is extremely clear: the leader is a power outlier through and through, and he warps the entire metagame around him while still putting up dominant win rates.

How Did We Get Here?
While many of our previous suspensions came about as the result of an existing card that received new tools to push it over the edge, Cad Bane released to immediate dominance. Put simply, this leader was a development mistake. While there are many moving parts that led to Cad Bane ending up the way he did, the shortest explanation is simply that we did not identify him as the best performing leader in the Aggression-Vigilance-Villainy shell, and felt he had exploitable weaknesses in the control-focused mirror matches. Cad Bane does well at keeping midrange and aggressive-focused strategies in check, but as we saw at the Berlin Sector Qualifier, more late-game strategies indexed around Single Reactor Ignition (even off-aspect) could grind Cad Bane down in longer games. During playtesting, we failed to optimize our more aggressive strategies that could push out our greedier control decks, which ultimately gave us a bad read on the eventual metagame, and a perfect environment for Cad Bane to thrive.
In Homeworlds, Icons, and beyond, as we again focused on allocating power to different strategies than those that were successful in the Ashes of the Empire metagame, our internal meta shifted away from the slowed control strategies, and Cad Bane quickly emerged as a powerhouse. Unfortunately, this revelation came at a point too late to make changes to Ashes of the Empire. Catching it in Homeworlds development a year ago does mean that we were able to make process improvements to our balance playtesting.
Our internal testing can get us very good approximations of what the metagame might be, but we never complete our testing with 100% confidence in our assumptions. In A Lawless Time, we had high expectations that aggressive strategies would be dominant, with Pilot leaders and Aggressive Negotiations as some of the more powerful, but certainly not unbeatable, archetypes. We can get pretty close to the overall shape of a metagame, but getting the exact leaders correct can be almost impossible. To put things into perspective, there are more games played in the first week of a set's release than in the entirety of internal development. We had high expectations for Aggression-Vigilance-Villainy, and while we identified Cad Bane as an overperformer eventually, it’s always difficult to tell whether our assumptions will translate to the competitive metagame, or if innovators will be able to find counters that we missed. Here, we made a mistake with Cad, and things played out predictably, but that hasn’t been and won’t always be the case. As an example, we completely missed the breakout Lando Calrissian: Full Sabacc with Lake Country in our testing, but we did have some powerful Master Codebreaker: High Stakes strategies focused around similar Gambit packages. It’s important to reiterate from previous articles that preemptive suspensions are not something we are looking to explore, but we are always willing to take quick action when problems arise.
Why Just Cad Bane?
Many players may wonder if other suspensions were on the table, and while we always consider many options when making an announcement like this, we ultimately felt that Cad Bane is warping the metagame so much that taking additional action would be done with unreliable data to back up those decisions. With Cad Bane making up over 20% of the metagame and keeping an untold number of decks almost entirely out of the meta, we are moving forward with suspending only Cad Bane, and will keep an eye on the format as we get closer to our Homeworlds meta check-in.
