Prerelease Events are the perfect way to usher in a new set, and also serve as a great way to introduce new players to Star Wars: Unlimited! In this section, we’ll go over the ins and outs of Prerelease Events, including what they entail and what you need to run one.
When to Host a Prerelease Event
Every four months, a new set of Star Wars: Unlimited will release. In the week leading up to that release, you can host your Prerelease Event.
If you miss this window, or if you somehow ended up with more prerelease materials than you needed, don’t worry! You can always use prerelease materials to help support other events during the set’s season. This can be a great way of clearing out extra stock while also providing goodies to players who may not have been able to attend any prerelease events for that season.
What You’ll Need
First and foremost, you will need a Prerelease Box for each player who attends the event. This box provides six booster packs, two promo leader cards, and some damage counters that the player can use throughout the event.
The Launch Kit organized play product should be utilized alongside this event. The kit provides each player with a base for each aspect, allowing them to use any aspect in tandem with their chosen leader for their deck. The kit also includes some promo cards specifically to award to your judges for the event, to serve as thanks for them helping you out. Sent alongside the kit is a display box of booster packs, which you are encouraged to use as prizes for your Prerelease Event.
Also, don’t forget to schedule your event on Melee.gg so that it appears on the official event locator!
Suggested Event Structure
Most Prerelease Events take the form of a simple sealed tournament. Players build decks for this tournament using the booster packs included in their Prerelease Boxes, supplemented by the promo cards from those same boxes and the bases from the Launch Kit.
Here are some suggested parameters for this tournament:
- Swiss rounds based on the total number of players registered
- Each round is best-of-3.
- Each round is 55 minutes long.
- The tournament must be run using Melee.gg.

We understand that every retail location serves a unique community with different needs and expectations. While we are confident that the tournament configuration above will create a thrilling Star Wars: Unlimited experience, each store is also encouraged to change the configuration to best support the size of their player base, the available play space, and the store’s overall aspirations for the prerelease event.
