A Weekend of Competition: Tales From the Utrecht Regional

November 6, 2026 | Written by Jack Broomell

The Star Wars™: Unlimited community made its way to Utrecht, Netherlands, this past weekend for another exciting Regional Championship! Players from across Europe and beyond gathered for three days of competition, community events, and plenty of opportunities to celebrate the game.

With the latest set, Homeworlds, now in players' hands, there was plenty to look forward to heading into the weekend. From the strategies players brought to the table to the stories that unfolded throughout the tournament, Utrecht gave us another great opportunity to see our competitive community in action.

In fact, Utrecht was a historic stop for Star Wars: Unlimited Organized Play. The Limited event was the largest we've ever held outside of a Galactic Championship, while the individual events ranked as our second and third largest ever outside of a Galactic Championship. There were over 1,500 participants from the weekend between both events. The only event to surpass them was the Season 0 Regional Championship in Lille, France!

Whether players were chasing a championship, testing out new decks, or simply enjoying the weekend with fellow fans, there was no shortage of Star Wars: Unlimited to enjoy.

Before we dive into the action, congratulations to Mikołaj Wendowski for winning the Limited event and Xavier Vandeweghe for taking home the Premier champion’s medal!

Limited: Building a Champion

The weekend's competitive action began with the Limited event on Friday. With players building decks from a selection of newly opened cards, Limited always provides an interesting look at how players approach the game when they must work with what's in front of them.

This time around, 723 competitors took part in the event, making it the largest Limited event we've ever hosted outside of a Galactic Championship!

Here's a look at the leaders players chose heading into the event:

Going into the weekend, many players identified the power of some of the common leaders in limited play, and we see that take shape with which leaders were played during Sealed! The Tarfful leader and the Doctor Hemlock leader allowed players to cut some lower cost units in favor of higher cost cards because their leader abilities will always give them something to do the first turn of the game. While leaders like the Poggle the Lesser leader and The Warrior leader give you an advantage of readying your beasts or giving your units Ambush respectively.

As the rounds progressed, the field began to narrow, eventually leaving 95 players who made it to Day 2 and determine our champion. If you followed along with our eventual winner, you would have seen them use the Bossk leader with an Aggression Endor base in Sealed, then swap to the Doctor Hemlock Leader (showcase!) with a Cunning Naboo base for their first draft on Day 2. During their second draft on Saturday, they landed on playing the Tarfful leader with a Vigilance Kashyyyk base.

Then finally on Sunday during Top, 8 they drafted the Doctor Hemlock leader again but this time with a Command Kashyyyk base!

After a hard-fought series of matches, Mikołaj Wendowski emerged victorious!

Premier: The Competitive Landscape

Saturday brought the Premier event, with players putting their constructed decks to the test in pursuit of a Regional Championship title and earning a place in the Galactic Championship.

With Homeworlds entering the competitive environment, Utrecht was another opportunity to see how players were incorporating the new cards into established strategies. Would familiar leaders continue to dominate, or would some of the newer options make a splash?

A total of 789 players entered the tournament, creating a competitive field that would take 13 rounds of Swiss play to narrow down to a Top 8.

Let's look at the leaders and decks that made up the field:

Going into the weekend, many players were expecting most decks to incorporate the Chimaera unit or the Neel unit with leaders that generated credits leading the way like the Director Krennic leader or the Lando Calrissian leader. There was a surprise deck that made the finals featuring the Mother Talzin leader and a Mystic Monastery base. We also saw some new leaders show up, such as the Doctor Hemlock leader and the Wicket leader, demonstrating that there may be more room for experimentation in the current competitive environment than some expected.

Once the Swiss rounds wrapped up, the remaining competitors moved on to the Top 8, where the stakes were higher and every match brought players one step closer to the title.

Here are the decks that made it through the field:

A Showcase Achievement

One of the other exciting milestones from Utrecht came during the Premier event's Day 2.

We awarded a total of 24 Showcase cards to players competing on Day 2, making Utrecht the event where we've given out the most Showcases in the history of Star Wars: Unlimited!

It's always great to see these special versions of cards make their way into the hands of our competitive players, and having 24 awarded over the course of the weekend was another reflection of just how large and competitive this event was.

Hear From Our Champions

A Regional Championship is a huge accomplishment, and we wanted to give our winners an opportunity to share a little about their experience in Utrecht.

Limited Champion: Mikołaj Wendowski

"The key thing that allowed me to perform so well in Top 8 was acknowledging that I’m the only Doctor Hemlock player in the pod and drafting my deck accordingly using my mental checklist of all the things I need in the deck to answer all possible threats. A big highlight from the first draft on Day 2 was getting passed a Hemlock Showcase as my last pick leader and then winning all three games with him. He will be sitting on my shelf with other trophies.” - Mikołaj

Premier Champion: Xavier Vandeweghe

"I’m beyond happy with this run, it was an incredible experience! I found Wicket with friends from my team, and I was sold right away: it’s a super dynamic deck, and it plays Hammerhead, the card that brought me my first wins, so it’s always a pleasure to get to play it. Huge shoutout to the French community, and especially to my team — this event was a blast, and I was surrounded by great people, as always.” - Xavier

Congratulations again to both champions! It's always great to hear directly from the players who put in the time and effort to reach the top of the competition.

More Than Just the Main Event

While the Regional Championship may have been the centerpiece of the weekend, there were plenty of events happening outside of the main tournaments.

Players had opportunities to take part in side events all weekend! One of the most popular side events was the 2v2 Sealed Deck and the Carbonite Sealed Deck pods. These side events are a great chance to meet fellow members of the community and spend time enjoying everything the event had to offer.

One of the best parts of traveling to these events is seeing just how far the Star Wars: Unlimited community reaches. Utrecht welcomed players from 28 different countries including Taiwan, Canada and Romania bringing together familiar faces and new members of the community alike.

We also wanted to highlight the Studio Showdowns as players got a chance to play against FFG staff all weekend, and some games even used the Icons 2027 Edition Starter Box!

Until Next Time!

Another Regional Championship is in the books, and Utrecht gave us plenty of reasons to be excited about what's ahead for Star Wars: Unlimited Organized Play.

A massive thank you goes out to everyone who traveled to attend, competed throughout the weekend, helped bring the event together, and made Utrecht such a memorable stop on the competitive circuit.

If you missed out on any of the action, be sure to go back and watch some amazing games that took place all weekend: https://www.youtube.com/@Fanfinity
