Vigilance
As we move toward the release of the Star Wars™: Unlimited trading card game, we want to show off each of the game’s deckbuilding aspects. In a game of unlimited possibilities, the aspects help shape the direction and mechanics of the cards in your deck. Last month, we talked about what aspects are and how they affect the deckbuilding process. We also showed off some cards from the Heroism (white) and Villainy (black) aspects.
Today, we’d like to take a look at the first of the remaining aspects: the blue aspect, Vigilance!
The Vigilance aspect is all about defense and control. This can take a variety of forms, one of which is through the Sentinel keyword, which prevents your opponent from attacking your base or your non-Sentinel units. Many blue units like Lieutenant Childsen (Spark of Rebellion, 35) and Obi-Wan Kenobi (Spark of Rebellion, 49) have Sentinel naturally, while the leader Chewbacca (Spark of Rebellion, 3) can grant it to any friendly unit that costs 3 or less. Sentinel is a powerful ability that can severely hinder your opponent’s damage output, especially when you pair it with other abilities that punish your opponent for attacking your units. For example, when Chewbacca deploys onto his unit side, he loses the ability to grant Sentinel to his allies in favor of having Sentinel himself, and he also gains the Grit keyword, which increases his power for every point of damage he takes. Since your opponent can’t attack your base or your non-Sentinel units while Chewbacca is deployed, they’ll be forced to attack him, which only makes him stronger and stronger.
Of course, Sentinel is not the only way that the Vigilance aspect plays defensively. Some cards provide abilities that make your opponent think twice about attacking you in the first place. For example, Director Krennic (Spark of Rebellion, 1) has an ability that increases the power of your damaged units. If your opponent gets too aggressive, they may suddenly find themselves overwhelmed by your boosted units all at once.
If your opponent simply ignores your units and focuses on your base, you can deploy Krennic to get access to his Restore keyword, which heals your base each time he attacks. If that isn’t enough, use Repair (Spark of Rebellion, 74) to further patch up your base or heal a crucial defender. If you find yourself facing a monstrous unit on your opponent’s side, you can Vanquish (Spark of Rebellion, 78) it to give yourself some breathing room!
Sentinel, healing, unit removal. With all of these defensive options, it’s clear that this aspect is a great pick for patient players who prefer a playstyle that can endure anything an opponent throws at them. And no card embodies this playstyle more than Vigilance (Spark of Rebellion, 58) itself, a powerful “double-blue” event that grants you all the tools you need to craft your perfect defense!
