Teasers From Hyperspace

When we were starting previews for Twilight of the Republic, I shared some fun facts about the set so players could get started speculating ahead of time. Now I’m back for Jump to Lightspeed, this time with more clues and some fun set trivia!

This a set all about space battles, so while it introduces exciting new mechanics like indirect damage and Piloting, it also contains the most space units of any set we’ve printed yet. Did you know…

  • There are multiple common events from the first 2 sets that have been mirrored in this set, but this time with a “Vehicle only” or “space unit only” restriction (and balanced accordingly).
  • This set includes the first ground unit that can attack space units.
  • There is a powerful event that cares about the power of specifically a friendly space unit.
  • A unique space unit appears in this set twice…with different names.
  • There is a card in this set with the title “Jump to Lightspeed.”
  • This set contains two units that are tied for being the largest unit we’ve ever printed. (Both are larger than any unit from Sets 1-3.)
  • There are twice as many Modification upgrades in this set as there were in the first three sets combined!

As the person who wrote the subtitles for the first four sets of the game, I have a soft spot for the fun subtitles we can give our unique units. So what are some of the subtitles you can find in Jump to Lightspeed, and how many of them are on Vehicles?

  • Naval Adversary
  • Shrewd Sister
  • I Work Alone
  • Heart of the Family
  • Ambassadors’ Arrival
  • Wisecracking Wheelman
  • You Still With Me?
  • Prototype Battleship
  • Just Business
  • Dropping the Hammer
  • No Terms, No Surrender
  • Scourge of Squadrons

This set provides support for more different traits than any previous set, with ten different traits each receiving one or more cards that specifically benefit from that trait being used. But that’s not the only fun piece of trivia about the set. Did you know…

  • There is at least one unit in the set whose name starts with each letter of the alphabet…except Y. (We got so close!)
  • The wordiest leader in the set has 62 more words on it than the least-wordy leader.
  • An Aggression card in this set has an ability that permanently increases the number of resources you control.
  • A common in this set appears three times as often as every other common.
  • Not counting base health, the highest numeral that appears on a card is the number 15…and it appears in a text box!
  • One leader has the same trait printed on it 6 different times.
  • An uncommon from a previous set is reprinted in this set as a common.
  • There are multiple bases in the set with more than 30 HP.
  • The following words and phrases appear on exactly one card (each) in the entire set:
    • “extra”
    • “mulligan”
    • “half”
    • “detach”
    • “choose a base”
    • “ready them”
    • “different name"

Finally, I know fans are always eager to know what cards do. I can answer some of those questions…but I can’t promise you’re seeing the whole story with each of these abilities. What cards do you think they’re on, and what else could they do?

  • This unit can’t attack.
  • Each other friendly Spectre unit gains…
  • …ready each space unit you control.
  • If this unit would be defeated, you may instead…
  • If you control more space units than an opponent…
  • When you deploy a leader:
  • The first unit you play each round costs 2 less.
  • When you use a “When Defeated” ability:…
  • When Played/On Attack/When Defeated:…
  • Choose a friendly unit. For each of its “On Attack” abilities…
  • If you do, move this unit to the ground arena and give 2 Experience tokens to it.
  • Then, if they have more cards in their hand than you…
  • If no player has taken the initiative this phase, you may ready an enemy unit.

And that’s all the clues I have for you today! I look forward to seeing everyone’s speculation on social media as we begin preview season after our holiday break.

Until then, may you feel inspired to try something new.
