Growth and Change

July 28, 2025  |  Written by Peter Schumacher

Last year sure was a busy year for the Star Wars™: Unlimited trading card game! In addition to the launch of the game itself, we also saw the beginning of its Organized Play scene, with Casual Play active from day one and Competitive Play arriving just a few months later. Speaking of Competitive Play, up until now, we’ve been describing everything as “Season 0.” We’ve utilized this foundation season to try new ideas and generate community feedback in order to create the best program possible going forward.

Today, it’s finally time to unveil what we’ve been working on for the future of Star Wars: Unlimited Organized Play. The Galactic Championship officially marks the end of Season Zero, and so, without further ado, let’s take a look at what’s in store for Season 1!

Same Goals, Bigger Picture

At its core, the driving philosophy behind Organized Play (OP) has always been the same: Connect, Collect, Compete. With the rapid growth of the game’s community, our mission is to embody that philosophy and provide endless opportunities for players to engage in official OP events. Casual or competitive, new player or seasoned veteran, we want to make sure that there is always something to do!

Now that we’ve got a year of experience under our belts, we can expand on that goal, add in some flair to spice things up, and ultimately lay the groundwork for what Organized Play will look like for this game for its foreseeable future.

First, we’ve made some adjustments to the overall structure of Competitive Play, specifically our “Championship Series” tournaments (Planetary Qualifiers, Sector Qualifiers, Regional Championships, and the Galactic Championship). Just like with Season 0, all Planetary Qualifiers, Sector Qualifiers, and Regional Championships will be open events, which means there’s no prerequisite for being able to attend. However, the Galactic Championship main tournament will become an invitation-only event. Players can earn an invitation throughout the season in order to participate in the main tournament (we’ll go over how to earn an invite below), and for those who do not earn one in time, there will be an open opportunity to qualify through a Last Chance Qualifier on the Friday of Galactic Championship weekend. This all means that the player count for the Galactic Championship’s main tournament will be smaller, making for a more exclusive event. The scale and number of the other Competitive events will also be changing; we plan to hold around 170 Planetary Qualifiers, 3 Sector Qualifiers, and 1 Regional Championship per set. Multiply that by three sets, and you’ve got well over 500 Competitive events taking place between Galactic Championships—more than enough opportunities to earn yourself an invitation!

*QP rewards for Top 32 and Top 64 are only applicable if at least twice as many players are participating in the event.

As for how that invitation is earned, the process is a bit different than Season 0. You now can earn “Qualifier Points” (QP) based on your final placement, which you can see in the table above. Your QP are tracked throughout the season, and if you earn at least 100 QP across all the Competitive events you attend, then you’ll have earned yourself an invitation to the Galactic Championship main tournament. Winning a Planetary Qualifier gets you exactly 100 QP, which means all you need is one Planetary win to qualify.

So that’s Planetaries, now what about Sectors and Regionals? Well, if you make it to the Top 8 of either a Sector Qualifier or a Regional Championship, then you’ll earn yourself enough QP for an invitation to the Galactic Championship main tournament. Even if you don’t earn an outright invitation, you can still net quite a few QP just from placing well. And don’t forget, if you don’t earn enough QP throughout the season but still want a chance to play in the Galactic Championship main tournament, you can always sign up for our open-invite Last Chance Qualifier on Friday of the Galactic Championship weekend itself!

Speaking of the Galactic Championship, if you participated in this year’s main tournament, you may have earned some QP based off your final placement, potentially giving you a head start toward qualifying for next year’s event. If you made it all the way to the Top 16 in this year’s event, you’ll have earned enough points to immediately qualify you for the Season 1 Galactic Championship!

Finally, we’re also pleased to announce that the 32 players who earn the most QP over the course of Season 1 will be awarded paid flights and hotel for the Galactic Championship. We’ll provide more details on how this works in the coming months; in the meantime, keep on battling for those top spots!

Drafting a New Type of Event

We’re changing up more aspects of the Competitive circuit than just how you earn your way to the Galactic Championship. As we have mentioned many times in the past, Star Wars: Unlimited was designed with draft and sealed play in mind from the very beginning. These two limited play formats are part of the game’s very backbone—the booster packs are even specifically built to support them—and with so many players that love these formats around the world, we want to shine a spotlight on draft and sealed in our large-scale events.

With that in mind, we are excited to announce that draft and sealed play are coming to Competitive Star Wars: Unlimited! Starting in Season 1, players will have two routes they can take to the Galactic Championship: one for Premier, and one for limited formats. This means that some Competitive events will use Premier while others will be run as draft and/or sealed tournaments. You can earn QP by attending either type of event (or both), culminating in a hybrid Galactic Championship that will be mostly Premier with limited play mixed in—after all, for a game like Star Wars: Unlimited, the Galactic Champion should be someone who’s an expert at both limited and constructed formats! We’ll provide more details of how limited formats integrate into the Galactic Championship vision in the future. In the meantime, be sure to talk to your local store about setting up draft and sealed nights so you can get some practice in!

An Exciting Future Awaits

We still have tons of exciting things to show you for Season 1 of Organized Play. In addition to prize details, more information on limited play being introduced to Competitive events, and the official event schedule itself, you can also look forward to a proper deep dive into the 2026 Galactic Championship—including how it has evolved from this year’s event—at a later date.

Look forward to more information coming in the near future!
